Wrought iron knocker latch from the first half of the 18th century.  These latches were common at the time but rarely found today.   The drop stirrup style handle mounts through the door and operates the bar latch as well as acts as the knocker.  The handle mount fits through the pivot end hole of the bar which is held in plate together via the wrought iron wing nut.  Latch is complete with wrought iron rose head nail which serves as the knocker button, the bar, staple, and keeper.  The original bar (7" x 5/8") is off-set to allow a hand grasp for operation from the interior.  The well made knocker/handle measures 4 1/4" drop x 4" wide.  A replacement rosette handmade in our shop has decorative detail on the outer edge as shown in close-up below.  Drive-in staple is 1 3/4" high  x 4" deep - drive-in keeper is 3" overall.  Used on early thin doors - made for a maximum thickness of 1 3/4".
